Anterior Hip Replacement

Direct Anterior Hip Replacement

Dr. Boyd performs cutting edge surgical techniques such as Direct Anterior hip replacement. The anterior approach to hip replacement is a newer and less invasive way to perform hip replacement surgery. Compared to conventional posterior and lateral approaches to the hip that necessitate the cutting of muscles and tendons around the hip, the Direct Anterior approach does not require any muscles or tendons to be cut during surgery.

Patients who undergo the minimally invasive and muscle sparing Direct Anterior hip replacement report less pain and faster return to an active lifestyle compared to those who have undergone a conventional hip replacement through the posterior or lateral approach.

The Direct Anterior hip replacement is not applicable to all patients. Patients who have severe deformities or need revision hip replacement surgeries will be better served by a more traditional approach to hip replacement. Please feel free to ask Dr. Boyd if you are a candidate for anterior hip replacement surgery.

Advantages of the Direct Anterior hip replacement include:

  • Less postoperative pain
  • Minimal soft-tissue trauma
  • Increased early post-operative strength
  • Smaller incision
  • Less scarring
  • Quicker recovery
  • Early mobilization
  • Less postoperative restrictions
  • Quicker return to normal activities
  • Short hospital stay
